A Short History

Charlotte Reihlen of Stuttgart (1805 - 1868)  The designer of the well known "Broad and the Narrow Way picture". Some years before Mrs Reihlen passed away 21st January 1868 she was inspired to create the picture called the Broad and Narrow Way after seeing earlier versions based on the scripture Matthew 7:13-14. Eventually Mrs Reihlen found a talented and capable artist in Conrad Schacher to create the picture and message she wanted to make known to the world.

The competition will have Charlotte Reilhen’s Explanation and her picture to give the criteria and entrants will have the opportunity to create original pictures within the boundaries set.

Although the original explanation and picture come from a different era, it is hoped entrants will find many ways to express Charlotte Reihlen's original message through their pictures for this generation.   It is part of the challenge for entrants to follow carefully the explanation of the original picture and will be marked accordingly.

Finished artwork will be judged according to how well an artist has transmitted the message for today's generation. Faithfulness to Scripture, Interpretation and Originality, Expression, Style and Balance.

Entrants can follow the Bible and Scripture verses mentioned in the Explanation to better able to translate into their picture. For participants not familiar with the Bible - By all means seek out help from a friendly Church or Pastor to help.  Artwork will also be judged how well Bible verses and scriptures have been portrayed and expressed. To capture the message of the Broad and Narrow Way and portray this for today's generation.

Each entrant will need to write their own explanation separately for their picture in their own words within an A4 sheet to explain their picture This will also be judged and marked for the competition.
