Crushing the Serpents Head - Prints and cards
Some years ago I read a book which had an article about Crucifixion based on excavated bones of a man found at Giv'at ha-Mivtar just north of Jerusalem. The Romans crucified many thousands during their occupation in Judea, the discovery of this evidence helps us to understand the scripture Genesis 3:15 and the fulfilment of prophecy. Over the years I have reflected upon this scripture and what it means, and has resulted in the picture, reproduced here. As you look at the cross of Christ you will notice the Roman method of crucifixion involved nailing the heel bones, this takes us to the scripture..............And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head and you will strike his heel" - Genesis 3:15
Scripture has been fulfilled - And the picture depicts this victory. The serpent lies crushed under the cross of Christ, death is symbolised by a cracked tombstone with chains of fear broken. Those who were once held in slavery by their fear of death set free - Christ having demonstrated his victory by rising from the dead, offers Eternal life to all who believe in him. - Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death -that is the, devil-and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. Hebrews 2:14-15
